Babies are born with natural reflexes enabling them to propel themselves through water and to automatically hold their breath.
At Little Gem Swimmers we encourage these reflexes with supported floating exercises and by developing and strengthening their own natural movement in the water. Practicing early swimming regularly will help babies make the transition from these natural movements into conscious movements giving them the skills they need for life. Once babies become more mobile there are obvious risks in and around the pool. At this stage our focus is on mastering safety skills and self confidence in the water through bonding, communication, trust, play and lots of fun. Teaching a child to stay afloat, return to the poolside and develop leg and arm movements are invaluable skills and will help to save lives. Little Gem Swimmer classes are taught in a unique way combining music and singing to help develop key water safety skills in a fun and positive way. Little Gem Swimmers is run by Blaise Hills and has been operating in Spain since 2004. Blaise and all instructors are fully trained and hold full qualifications with The Swimming Teachers Association (STA) in England. Little Gem Swimmers believes that our children are precious and a way in which we can help keep them safe is by teaching essential safety skills in a fun and relaxed environment. Little Gem Swimmer classes are structured according to age and ability and babies can begin at just 3 months old. Our instructors are STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) trained and qualified and undergo an intensive training program and attend regular workshops. BENEFITS OF EARLY SWIMMING
Little Gem Swimmers recommends teaching your young child as much free movement as possible; not in a formal way, but through play and encouragement. This will lead to swimming when your little one is physically and emotionally ready. The focus should always be on having fun in the water, without any pressure for achievement. We limit each class to a maximum of seven participants, and until the children are able to be safe in the water without swimming aids, an adult is required to be in the water with them at all times. Indeed the adult is a core part of the teaching process. However, the primary aim is for the children to learn whilst having fun, and the process includes water based games and songs etc. Each lesson lasts for 30 minutes, and we recommend that you have a drink and snack available for afterwards, as they will often build up an appetite during the lessons. Be advised that the pool providers insist that anyone entering the pool (adults and babies) wear swimming hats, and anyone entering the pool area (i.e. non participating parents who wish to watch) wear swimwear (or sportswear as a minimum). Essentially, for hygiene reasons, they do not allow normal clothes and shoes (Flip-flops etc. are fine) to be worn in the pool area. |
